Billy Grossi in the pits. Admiring a pouch for Tear offs that I gave him. I always enjoyed being around “Sugar Bear!”
Billy Grossi, an AHRMA and AMA member, was severely injured in the Sears Point race the weekend of April 27 & 28. He suffered a leg broken in 5 places, cracked ribs, dislocated shoulder and concussion, and spent 3 days in the hospital. Any one knowing Billy knows he is a fine person, an excellent racer and an all-around nice guy.
Bill and Bob Grossi: The Grossi boys from Santa Cruz were both factory riders at one point, and both have outdoor national wins. Bob won the ’73 Daytona race on a Husqvarna, which actually counted as the opening round of the ’73 AMA Motocross Championships; Billy, otherwise known as “Sugar Bear,” won the ’74 opener at Hangtown on a Honda.
My favorite picture of “Sugar Bear” is on the Trans AMA Poster that Mid Ohio would use. It is on our Home slider. Billy is wearing the original “Mud Muckers”
